This weekend marks the first of two major summertime events in Nuremberg, the "Klassik Open Air" concerts that attract 100,000 people each year for an evening of classical music and picnicking. Comprised of two separate performances of the Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nuremberg Symphony, "Klassik Open Air" is known locally as the "Woodstock" of classical music.

Unlike the demographics of many classical music concerts these days, one third of the audience members at "Klassik Open Air" concerts are between 19 and 25 years old. One of the largest classical open air concerts in Europe, the annual event routinely receives rave reviews, with spirits not dampened even by rain.

The first of two concerts this summer will take place on Sunday, July 25 at the Nürnberger Dutzendteich at 8 p.m. Entitled "Oper und Tänze" ("Opera and Dances"), the concert will be directed by Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Christof Prick. Entry is free, though it is advised to arrive hours in advance to reserve a spot. Fireworks to follow.
